Hearing God

Topic: Hearing God

Text: 1 Samuel 3:10 NIV
“The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.””

Discussion:
In my early days as a believer of Jesus Christ, I often heard our Pastor say: “God told me…” And I couldn’t wrap my mind around that. My background is Protestant. From such orthodox background, I felt that someone claiming that God speaks to him was just way too much of a bold statement to make! I never heard such statement where I came from, at least, back then!

Sunday after Sunday, our Pastor makes such bold statements repeatedly. One certain night, I made up my mind that I was going pray until I hear God by myself. So, I waited until everyone has gone to bed. I switched off the lights and I started praying. My prayer was simple and direct: “Lord, I want to hear Your voice tonight. I’m not leaving until I hear Your voice. My Pastor keeps saying that you spoke to him. If that’s true, tonight, I want to hear your voice.”

I kept praying these words repeatedly because that was the only need in my heart at that moment. And all of a sudden, I heard a voice that didn’t sound like a voice. It was small and too still and calm to be audible. Yet, it was the most audible voice I ever heard. The voice stated a scriptural verse.

I rushed and switched the lights on. When I opened my Bible, the scripture reads: “Be calm, for I am about to speak to you…” There were goosebumps all over my body. I said: “Lord, now I know that you truly speak to Your children. That’s enough for me for tonight.” I went to bed and slept like a baby! And since then, there has never been greater assurance than hearing His voice.

Listen to God and you will hear Him. He has spoken to you already and you have His word.- in the Bible. As you bow your heart to study the word of God, God will bend to speak to your ears! And if you humble yourself to seek His opinion about your everyday life, God will be willing to be part of your success story. He is a Father. And He is the Father! Go to your Father today and He will speak to you!
